Step 1. Pre-class survey.

We are looking forward to working with you in an upcoming EndNote workshop.

We request that you:

Complete a brief survey prior to class.

If you are planning to use your own computer during class, please complete the following Steps 2-5.

Contact us if you have questions or problems:

Step 2. Install EndNote x7 on your laptop.

We encourage participants to bring their own laptops to the workshop with EndNote already installed. Please contact us prior to class if you are having problems with the EndNote installation as there will not be time in class to problem-solve installation.

EndNote is licensed by UC Davis, which makes it available for free to students.  From the following link to MyUCDavis, navigate to EndNote from the top menu tabs:

UCD Resources --> Software --> Select Library in left navigation column --> EndNote

    Download EndNote software

VERY IMPORTANT:  Follow the download instructions precisely.

If EndNote is installed correctly it will not ask for a product key.
Please see IT Knowledge Base article for complete instructions:

If you encounter issues with installing please send email to

After you download EndNote x7 you will be prompted to update the software.  We recommend that you respond to the prompt by updating EndNote to x 7.8

    Step 3. EndNote Videos

Step 4. Consider installing Firefox Browser, if it is not already installed.

This is recommended if you only have Safari browser.  While Safari and EndNote are compatible, some export to EndNote functions are not as streamlined in Safari (and can be frustrating).

    Download Mozilla Firefox

Step 5. Configure Google Scholar for UC-eLinks and EndNote

A configuration step is required to automatically access UC Davis Library's licensed full-text articles and export to EndNote from within Google Scholar.

    Go to:

Select the Settings gear icon.  Make the following adjustments:

    Search results:

    • Select 20 results per page.
    • Bibliography manager:  Select EndNote, not BibTex.
    • Save

    Library Links:

    • Note that Open WorldCat is selected.
    • If University of California Davis - UCD-eLinks is not already selected, then search for it and click on the checkbox.
    • If California Digital Library - UC-eLInks is not already selected, then search for it and click on the checkbox.
    • Save
