About David Michalski

As the Social and Cultural Studies Librarian, I am one of the librarians at UC Davis who is responsible for making sure the University Library serves the research and teaching mission of the University.

I am especially focused on the subjects of African and African American Studies, American Studies, Anthropology, Asian American Studies, Critical Theory, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies, Geography, Human and Community and Region Development, Sociology, and Sexuality, Women and Gender Studies.

I work at a public reference desk and help maintain an extensive reference collection online and in print on the second floor of Peter J. Shields Library. I hold office hours for research consultations for students, graduates and faculty. And I am available to teach library information and research skills classes in the humanities and social sciences. I have taught hundreds of such sessions over the years and met with thousands of students and faculty, letting them know what the University Library has to offer, trading search strategies, and always learning more about what students and researchers are working on at UC Davis.

If you are new here, or if you are looking for some new information about a project, please know, I am interested in learning more about your work in the social, cultural or behavioral sciences, whether your working on a short term project or paper, or a longer endeavor, like a dissertation, journal article or book.  Learning about your projects and goals helps me to build better library collections, better research networks, and it helps me enhance library services to meet both your needs and the needs of the UC Davis community today and tomorrow.

Research Guides

  • SOCIOLOGY and related social sciences
This guide introduces some of the research tools available for the study of people, their societies and their social relations.
A good starting point for research in the women's studies, gender studies and the study of the social aspects of sexuality.
This guide merges resources on African American Studies and African Area Studies. Be careful to read the scope of each resource to be sure it fits your information need. Note also that some of the best databases for researching African American Studies issues are wide interdisciplinary Social Sciences and Humanities.
Asian American Studies is an Interdisciplinary field of study, without a central indexing or abstracting tool. Scholarly resources in Asian American Studies, however, can be found in a variety of social science and humanities databases. Some of the most useful are linked here.
